Patient care has a variety of benefits, and all can improve the quality of life for both nurses and the people they care for. Patient care is the care the patient needs when the patient needs it, in an affordable, safe, effective manner.
It is estimated that patient harm is the 14th leading cause of morbidity and mortality across the world. There are 421 million hospitalizations in the world wide annually, 42.8 adverse events occur in patients during this hospitalizations. The high income countries as in 1to 10 patients is harmed while receiving hospital care. The harm can be caused by adverse events, with nearly 50% of them are preventable, around 26 low and middle income countries the rate of adverse events was 8%, of which 83% preventable and 30% led to death. The cost associated with medication errors has been estimated at $42 billion annually, this amounts almost 1% of global expenditure on health. 15% health spending is wasted dealing with all aspects of adverse effects. In United states alone, focused on safety improvements led to an estimated $ 28billion saving in medical care hospitals in 2010-2015. Lack of adequate number of nurses can impact patient care in number of ways, increase of 1 full time RN per 1000inpatient days was associated with a 4.3% decrease in patient mortality, intensive care unit patients cared for by hospitals with below- target RN staffing levels had an increase of 2-7% and for patients who were not in an ICU this risk was increased by 12%.
