Tarsha Jones

Florida Atlantic University, USA

  • Title Of Presentation : Mental Illness and BRCA1/2 Genetic Testing Intention Among Multiethnic Women Undergoing Screening Mammography

Dr. Tarsha Jones is an Assistant Professor of Nursing in the College of Nursing. Her area of expertise is in community and public health nursing. Her research interests focuses on cancer prevention and risk-reduction of breast and ovarian cancers. She is interested in developing an intervention to provide decision-support and to increase uptake of BRCA and other high penetrance genetic testing among underserved populations, particularly young Black and Hispanic women with a hereditary cancer risk in order to promote early detection, risk-reduction, and to reduce cancer health disparities among these groups. Her doctoral dissertation examined the use of cancer genetics services and factors associated with uptake of genetic counseling and testing among young Black breast cancer survivors diagnosed at age 45 and younger. Findings revealed an underutilization of cancer genetic services among these women and most reported that they did not receive a recommendation to have genetic testing despite being diagnosed with early-age-onset breast cancer. This work was published in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine and selected for an oral podium presentation at the International Society of Nurses in Genetics (ISONG) World Congress. Dr. Jones is also interested in integrating cancer risk assessment and genetic testing for hereditary cancer syndromes in nursing practice within community health settings.

Ruth Chambers

Keele University, UK

  • Title Of Presentation : Clinical lead technology enabled care services programme, Staffordshire STP digital workstream

Ruth is an honorary professor at Staffordshire University and also Keele University. Until recently she was Clinical Chair of Stoke-on-Trent CCG and has recently retired from a 40 year stint as a practising family doctor.

Ten years ago, Ruth led on establishing a Quality Improvement Framework across Stoke-on-Trent which has raised standards in general practices on a wide range of measures, from staff development to patient empowerment, improved clinical practice and patients’ health outcomes. A feature of this wide-scale quality improvement programme has been the emphasis on popular and practical educational events, master classes, and initiatives to enable patient care to be safely delivered in primary care settings. Where practices were found to be weak, her team offered support, enabling them to build on their strengths, and incorporate changes within a culture of learning. Having established this pattern, she was able to support other areas to make similar changes as a consultant in various areas of the UK, and her practical clinical background enabled other clinicians to accept local initiatives more readily. Ruth has built on this experience to design and clinically lead the digital upskilling of general practice nurses-across Staffordshire and via further action learning set cohorts of ten nurses to create 120 digital nurse champions in twelve other areas of England.

Over a long career Ruth has written 71 books (yes 71!!) –mainly for general practice teams, a few for the public. Ruth has presented at local events/ national & international conferences on many subjects, reflecting her evolving interests and achievements – eg doctors’ stress, NHS Health Check, patient empowerment, technology enabled care; as well as carrying out research (Ruth got an MD in 1996), and contributing to national guidance.
